Survey Over, 78 Stretches In Lutyens’ Delhi To Be Repaired
New Delhi: CSIR-Central Road Research Institute undertook a visual distress survey of 78 roads in Lutyens' Delhi on New Delhi Municipal Council's instructions. The report identifies distresses on roads that have completed over five years of the bitumen lifespan that included deep cracks and surface deterioration and records their severity and extent. While the interim report has already been submitted to NDMC, a final report with photos and other specifications will be given in a month's time. According to NDMC officials, CRRI will provide technical guidance in ascertaining quality control and maintenance of the road network in Lutyens' Delhi."We identified road deficits, roughness and health based on the pavement condition index and our report has suggested rehabilitation and surface treatment as specified in Indian Road Congress guidelines. We emphasised the necessity of milling (removing the top asphalt layer) on all roads before treatment to avoid raising road levels and causing waterlogging of neighbouring areas," said Sunil Jain, chief scientist, CRRI.On CP's Outer Circle Road, CRRI found cracks and advised 50-60mm milling and a 50mm stone matrix asphalt treatment. On Panchkuian Road, it suggested milling up to 90 mm, followed by the laying of a 50mm bituminous macadam and 40mm bituminous concrete. At Atul Grover Road, a bituminous concrete layer of 40 mm was recommended after milling 50mm. While Jai Singh Road was determined to be in good condition, roundabout was deemed deteriorated and milling and stone asphalt has been advised. In some locations, such as Golf Link Road, CRRI recommended 150-160 mm milling followed by 40mm bitumen-concrete treatment to bring road level down by 120mm and prevent the seasonal waterlogging. Of the 78 avenue roads surveyed, eight roads were in the Connaught Place division — Outer Circle Road, Inner Circle Road, Panchkuian Road, Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Sansad Marg, Janpath, the lane behind Regal Building and Kasturba Gandhi Marg. The 18 roads surveyed in R-I division included Atul Grover Road, Dr Rajendra Prasad Road, Jai Singh Road, Janpath, Bhagwan Das Road, Sikandra Road, Copernicus Marg, C Hexagon and Zakir Hussain Marg, while among the 21 surveyed in R-II division were APJ Abdul Kalam Road, Archbishop Makarios Marg, Aurobindo Marg, Lodhi Road and Amrita Shergil Marg. The 28 roads in R-IV division included Sardar Patel Marg, Nyaya Marg, Malcha Marg, Jesus and Mary Marg and South Avenue Marg, while in R-V division, four were scrutinised, including Pandit Pant Marg and Kali Bari Marg."NDMC will now prepare the estimated cost for the project and float a tender for road maintenance," said a CRRI official. During construction, NDMC will summon CRRI again for a random survey to determine lapses during work execution, if any.
