Study entrepreneurship in DU as a grad course next year
NEW DELHI: The Delhi University (DU) is planning to start a new degree course on entrepreneurship from next academic year. The standing committee on academic matters, which met after more than a year on Monday, gave its approval to the proposal. The new course will be run under the faculty of applied social sciences and humanities. It is yet to be approved by the academic council.
The three-year degree program — BBA (entrepreneurship) — is going to be the first of its kind in Delhi. The course is either available as diploma in various higher education institutions or the degree is offered by private universities.
According to the proposal submitted to the standing committee (a copy of which is with TOI), the faculty wants to equip students with the skills needed to start their own enterprises. Along with this, the course is also in tune with the Delhi government and Centre’s push for skill-development and entrepreneurship at academic levels.
Currently, only seven institutions across India offer BBA (entrepreneurship). Officials said the DU course is targeted at budding entrepreneurs and those wanting to work in established business. According to Poonam Verma, principal of Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies — which made the proposal — this course is the first of its kind being offered in Delhi and will start from her college if approved.
According to the proposal, the admission to the course will be through an entrance test, group discussion and personal interview. The entrance test will be designed to test the reasoning and quantitative aptitude.
During their course of study, the approved proposal states, the students will be expected to complete two internships and submit a dissertation at the end of the 6th semester. The total 3-year degree course will of 158 credits.
Verma said that the panel behind the proposal has been in talks with the professors of Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India in Ahmedabad for more than a year. “We spoke to the faculty there at length and realised that the younger generation in this field is much faster in learning as compared to what we had been. They are now learning things that we used to learn during our PG courses. The syllabus has been created keeping this in mind,” she said.
