Delhi air pollution: Students out on streets for policy change

NEW DELHI: Protesting against pollution in the city and demanding that the governments take action to improve the situation, students of Delhi University, Jawaharlal Henru University, Jamia Millia Islamia and Ambedkar University formed a human chain. With their hands held tight, the students assembled at Connaught Place and called for a policy change to make the air better.

The students attacked the Centre and the Delhi government for their inadequate measures to counter the health emergency.Holding placards of ‘Environment Matters’ at CP’s Central Park, they demanded that Delhi Metro rides should be made free for a month and the government should arrange for 10,000 DTC CNG buses to control private vehicular movement. They also want construction activities and running of diesel generators to be banned for the next month, while compensating workers to ensure they do not lose their daily earnings.
“Enforce compliance of pollution standards for industries. They contribute 30% to the total air pollution in Delhi,” said Kawalpreet Kaur, Delhi president of student group AISA. “The political parties must show political will to address it instead of playing blame game.”
