Saxena was stabbed and had his throat slit on February 1 by some neighbours over an alleged affair with their daughter.

On Thursday, Ankit’s father, Yashpal Saxena served his late son’s favourite dish, rajma chawal, to passersby and neighbours after holding a brief prayer in his memory.

Besides birthday posters, they also put up a board inviting people from all faiths to take part in the bhandara. After Saxena’s death, his family had appealed to everybody not to communalise it.

“Ankit’s mother had planned to celebrate his 24th birthday by holding a kirtan as it was falling during Navratari,” said cousin Ashish Duggal. “The sapling will grow and we’ll feel that he is still with us.”

Members of Saxena’s YouTube channel, Awara Boys, got special T-shirts printed with his photo on the front.

Ankit’s father will now work on a trust in his name. “Ankit died at an age when he was to make a career. We want to help others in the same age group,” Yashpal said.
