SI, constable held for robbing jeweller of Rs 8.4 lakh near Ajmal Khan Park

New Delhi: A Delhi Police sub-inspector and a constable have been arrested for allegedly robbing a jeweller of Rs 8.4 lakh in central Delhi’s DBG Road area, police said on Wednesday.

The case came to light after Deepak Soni, a resident of Jalaun district in Uttar Pradesh, lodged a complaint stating that the incident occurred on March 24 near Ajmal Khan Park. Soni alleged that two police personnel took away Rs 8.4 lakh from him out of the Rs 10.4 lakh he was carrying.

According to sources, Soni had come to Delhi to purchase gold and silver items as he was preparing to open a new jewellery shop. He was allegedly lured to the city by a man who promised to help him arrange jewellery.

Investigators said the two policemen approached Soni near Ajmal Khan Park as part of a conspiracy. They allegedly threatened him, recorded a video showing him with the cash, and claimed the money was counterfeit. The cops reportedly warned him of legal action, including arrest.

Under pressure, the victim handed over the entire amount. The cops allegedly returned Rs 2 lakh but fled with the remaining Rs 8.4 lakh.

Investigators said the complainant had been taken to the spot by the man who had called him to Delhi, where the cops intercepted him and forcibly entered his vehicle.

After the incident, when Soni made a PCR call, one of the policemen allegedly reached the spot and threatened him against pursuing the complaint.

Senior police officers took cognisance of the complaint and ordered an inquiry. Both accused — sub-inspector Mahavir and constable Vicky — were placed under suspension, and a departmental inquiry was initiated.

During the inquiry, the allegations were found to be substantiated. A case was subsequently registered at DBG Road police station under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including robbery, wrongful confinement and criminal acts done with common intention.

Both accused were arrested on March 30 and remanded to judicial custody. Police said efforts are underway to trace the associate who allegedly played a key role in luring the victim to Delhi.
