NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Friday fixed March 7 for hearing arguments on charges against Aaftab Poonawala, accused of strangling his live-in partner
Shraddha Walkar and chopping her body into pieces.
Additional sessions judge Manisha Khurana Kakkar fixed the date for hearing on charges after Poonawala was produced physically before the court. The principal district and sessions judge Narottam Kaushal assigned the Shraddha murder case to ASJ Kakkar for further hearing in the matter.
Advocate MS Khan submitted before the court that he is the counsel for the accused and a legal aid counsel (LAC) cannot be appointed when there is a private counsel already engaged. He also submitted that he will withdraw his vakalatnama, if any other private counsel appears for the accused.
On February 21, the court of metropolitan magistrate Aviral Shukla sent the Mehrauli murder case to a sessions court for initiation of trial proceedings.
The court of MM Aviral Shukla, noting that the chargesheet was filed under sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence or giving false information to screen offender) of the Indian Penal Code, said, "Scrutiny of documents is complete. Section 302 of the IPC is exclusively triable by a sessions court. Accordingly, the accused be produced before the principal district and sessions judge on February 24 at 2 pm. The case is now committed to the sessions court."
Earlier on February 7, the court had taken cognizance of the 6,629-page chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police on January 24. TNN
