NEW DELHI: A day prior to Assembly elections in the national capital, a police encounter took place in Outer Delhi's Bhalswa area, armed miscreants attacked a police team during a raid, leaving the Station House Officer of Rani Bagh police station injured.
According to police sources, based on intelligence about robbers in a Bhalswa building, a team headed by the Rani Bagh police station SHO conducted a raid and encircled the suspects, demanding their surrender.
The suspects responded by firing at the police team.
During the exchange of gunfire, the SHO narrowly avoided being shot. Despite facing gunfire, he successfully subdued one of the suspects.
The suspect struck the SHO's head with a firearm's butt whilst attempting to flee, causing injury. Subsequently, police apprehended three to four suspects, believed to have gang affiliations.
The events occurred between 4 AM and 6 AM.
Police officials confirmed recovering weapons and ammunition from the detained suspects during their investigation.
The investigation continues to progress.
Previously in January, Delhi Police dismantled an interstate illegal weapons supply network, arresting three members and seizing multiple firearms.
The North district Special Staff team of Delhi Police executed the operation. They seized five semi-automatic pistols, six country-made pistols (desi kata) and 28 live cartridges.
Delhi Police stated that the suspects were connected to supplying weapons to criminals involved in the 2023 Pragati Maidan Tunnel Robbery case.
Two of the three arrested suspects had been involved in illegal weapons distribution for two decades.
This development comes as the Model Code of Conduct is in effect, preceding the Delhi assembly elections scheduled for February 5.
