"Against the tyranny of fear we stand with our students. For every voice raised in anger, intolerance and ignorance there will be a Gurmehar Kaur," Rahul tweeted.

The Congress leader's comments come in the wake of the Centre accusing the opposition of giving political overtones to the developments over the Ramjas College protests.

Coming out in Gulmehar's defence, whose campaign drew controversial remarks from BJP leaders, the Congress tweeted, "When a woman thinks independently, patriarchal BJP thinks her mind is polluted. When a person 'bats' for peace, BJP responds with hate. We admire Gurmehar Kaur's courage to stand up against bullies and threats and to fight for rights of her fellow students."

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal too endorsed Gurmehar's stand against the ABVP and violence on the campus. He also attacked the BJP and said it had now become a party of "hooligans" and "criminals".

Sharing a video of Kaur speaking about the rape threats she received, Kejriwal tweeted, "Just listen to this. This is BJP. They will destroy our country. Everyone must rise against their goondaism."

"Threatening our daughters and sisters with rape, is this the BJP's patriotism? Shame on these people," he added.

Last week, following the incidents of violence and clashes between student groups ABVP and AISA at Ramjas College, Gurmehar posted an image of herself with a placard reading, "I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me. #StudentsAgainstABVP."

The post rapidly went viral, with students from various universities across the country posting pictures with similar placards.

to register her complaint.
