The power failure took place around 5pm when the supply tripped on the Central Secretariat to Kashmere Gate section. A Delhi Metro official attributed the failure to leakage from a water pipeline inside the tunnel between New Delhi and Chawri Bazar Metro stations. The snag was fixed around 6.25pm, but not before many passengers took to social media to vent their ire.

Nidhi Maheshwari, a commuter who was stuck at Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station, tweeted that she had been stranded for almost 25 minutes with no information on the situation. “At least inform us if there is any technical issue so that who are in urgent can leave via other transport. Really disappointed. (sic)” she said.

During the affected period, crowd had started building up at major stations, and CISF personnel could be seen stopping the entry to platforms at the Rajiv Chowk station. Several commuters even complained of being fined a penalty due to the delay.

Raj Rishi, a photographer who boarded from the Malviya Nagar Metro Station around 5.15pm, took 1.5 hours to reach Rajiv Chowk. “It is the metro’s fault. It delayed my commute because of which I had to take an alternate route to reach here. Now, they are asking for penalty,” Rishi complained.

Vikram Bhat, another commuter, said, “The services had been restored, but the trains were still running at intervals of over 10 minutes stopping at every station. I missed my scheduled meeting.”
