Police confirm arrests of 3 for Golf Links robbery, hunt on for 7
New Delhi: Confirming TOI’s report, Delhi Police on Monday said they had arrested robber Guddu Kamat (35), the mastermind behind the Golf Links heist, from Mumbai. Two of his associates, Raman Kamat and Amit Singh alias Gabbar, have also been arrested. A hunt is on for five more suspects.
According to police, 38-year-old Raman had worked at the house of liquor businessman Ashok Chawla as a domestic worker for a few days and quit. Thereafter, the gang had got another former help, Rahul, to refer another associate, Sushil, as a help. Sushil, who is currently at large, was the one who facilitated the entry of the gang in the house.
Gabbar had arranged logistics, driven the gang to the target house in an Ertiga car with a fake numberplate, and was also the getaway driver. He is a notorious autofilter with 19 cases against him.
The accused have told police that they had done a recce of the area for two days and gathered at the servant quarter of the bungalow 30 minutes before committing the crime at 7pm on April 16. To create fear and curb chances of resistance, they began to assault the family members and threatened to kill them. After the crime, they had parted ways and fled to different states with their share of booty.
The heist, reported from one of the most guarded localities in Lutyens’ Delhi, led the cops to form nine teams comprising around 100 personnel from Tughlaq Road and adjoining police stations. While one team scanned the footage of CCTV cameras in the vicinity, another other worked on a technical trail. The first hurdle was the absence of police verification or any identity documents of the three previous helps.
Then photographs of criminals with this modus operandi were shown to the family. As reported by TOI on Monday, the gang had committed a similar heist in Noida last year, too, besides a number of cases in 2015 and afterwards. Police then zeroed in on Kamat and associates.
Their social media profiles and mobile and internet protocol details records were analysed and a social media ping helped police trace Kamat and Raman’s location in Mumbai, sources said. A mobile they had stolen from the house also corroborated this. A team flew to Mumbai and nabbed them from Versova. They were hiding at a construction site and seeking employment there. Gabbar was, meanwhile, nabbed from Bulandshahr.
Kamat, from Madhubani in Bihar, is identified as a habitual offender with a history of seven robbery cases. He leveraged his past experience as a domestic worker to scout vulnerable targets. After his father’s death, Kamat had come to Delhi in search of a job 15 years ago and later took to crime for easy money.
