NEW DELHI: With the arrest of two persons, the southeast district police claimed to have busted a gang of frauds who cheated people by using fake demand drafts. The accused were arrested from Karawal Nagar in east Delhi.
According to the police, Rajkumar Dass (41) and Rajan Singh (32) promised their victims that they could get demand drafts prepared from any bank within shortest possible time and without paying the bank commission.
The police claimed the accused used to take money and hand over fake and forged demand drafts to unsuspecting victims.
The two also sold fake demand drafts to businessmen coming from outside Delhi. "These businessmen used the drafts to make payments to traders in Gandhi Nagar, Chandni Chowk and other places in Delhi. From the accused, we have seized eight forged demand drafts with total value of Rs 2.29 lakh. The drafts are shown to be issued from different branches of banks in Delhi, UP and Bihar,'' said DCP (southeast) Shalini Singh.
The two were arrested following complaints that were received by the police at Hazrat Nizamuddin police station from several businessman. Another complaint was received from a man who was duped of Rs 15,000 using a fake demand draft of Punjab National Bank.
According to the police, two disclosed that they, along with their associates, were running this racket for past several years. Raids are being conducted to apprehend other accused, said a police officer.
