New Delhi: A head constable posed as a groom-to-be and busted a racket, leading to the arrest of a 38-year-old man and his wife. The couple Din Mohammad Mandal and his wife operated a scam solemnising fake marriages to extort money.
In 2019, police received a complaint from a woman who claimed a couple approached her to join their racket. They took her to Mandal alias Rahul's house, where they forcefully solemnised her marriage with Hariom while she was under the influence of intoxication.
During the investigation, police arrested three people, including the couple and another woman. However, Rahul and his wife absconded and were declared proclaimed offenders by the court in Sept 2019.
Additional commissioner of Police (Crime) Sanjay Sain stated that they received information about a gang targeting individuals seeking brides. The gang members posed as the girl's family and mediators.
The Police tracked a person seeking a bride, who came into contact with Rahul and his wife. Head constable Surender posed as a groom-to-be and set a trap. The couple fell for it and asked to meet him. On Friday, the team successfully arrested the accused from Jahangirpuri.
According to the police, Mandal and his wife posed as the girl's sister and brother-in-law and pretended to be marriage mediators. They extorted Rs 70,000 from their victims.
Mandal was previously involved in an NDPS case, while his wife had two similar cases against her.
