"Two days ago, I came across this news of a youth meeting with an accident where he lay on the road for 10 minutes before help arrived. I have seen many people writing to me to do something about road safety," Modi said in his speech.
Family members of the youth, Vinay Jindal, hope to receive speedy justice after the Prime Minister himself has taken note of the incident. "We are really happy that the Prime Minister has promised to look into the aspects of road safety. True we have lost our son, but his effort will save a lot more lives," said Vinay's uncle, Mahender Gupta.
The family has sought a meeting with Modi this week to request for a speedy probe. Gupta said Vinay's eyes were donated to a bank after the body was handed over to them.
Meanwhile, police said that a team of officers are trying to identify the errant driver. They said no eyewitnesses could confirm the registration number of the car. However, CCTV cameras from all roads in the area have been recovered to identify the vehicle. Locals have also been asked to report if anyone saw the driver escape.
In 2014, 1,629 fatal accidents were reported, 825 took place at night, out of which 396 were cases of hit-and-run. Till July 15 this year, 822 fatal accidents have been reported of which 410 took place during the night and 181 were hit-and-run cases.
