NEW DELHI: The city government plans to recruit 7,239 home guards to fill posts lying vacant for long even as it has decided to extend the tenure of the volunteer force from seven years to nine. Home guards are seen critical to AAP dispensation's security plans for buses, especially for women.
"The decision, aimed at ensuring maximum safety and security for citizens of Delhi, particularly women, will instantly benefit more than 2,200 home guard volunteers who were going to complete their tenures in February and March 2016," a government official said.
In the long run, it would benefit the entire force of 10,285 home guard volunteers. Once enrolled, a volunteer may now serve for nine years. "The two-year extension will ensure a better motivated and disciplined force," said home minister Satyendar Jain.
The enrolment of some 7,000 home guards was pending for more than three years. The move is seen as a bid to generate employment opportunities for the youth in the city. To expedite the process, the government will soon release advertisements.
