Oppn highlights air pollution issue in and outside Parliament

New Delhi: The opposition led by Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Sonia Gandhi highlighted the issue of air pollution in Parliament, with members raising it inside Lok Sabha and the INDIA bloc holding a protest outside, on Thursday.

As a big contingent of MPs held a large banner bearing ‘Mausam ka maza lijiye' to mock the words delivered by PM Narendra Modi on the opening day of Parliament's winter session, Sonia said, "It is the govt's responsibility to do something as children are dying. Old people like me are also finding it difficult."


Taking a dig at the PM's words of "enjoy the weather", Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, "In Delhi, children and the elderly are unable to breathe. Every year the situation worsens, but the govt takes no concrete steps, only issuing statements."

While some MPs held up placards and banners, other wore big masks to highlight the crisis.

In Lok Sabha, Congress MPs Manish Tewari, Manickam Tagore, Mohd Jawed among others sought a discussion on air pollution. Tewari asked Speaker Om Birla to show sensitivity over the crisis. The chair turned down their plea for a discussion.
