New Delhi: The Ola taxi driver who had allegedly molested a Belgian woman in his cab while ferrying her to Chittaranjan Park in south Delhi was arrested by Delhi Police on Sunday morning from his Gurgaon residence within three hours of the FIR being registered.
Balraj Singh, the 22-year-old accused, was driving the cab owned by Vikram Singh, who runs a cab service.
Vikram was named as the driver when the cab was booked. It's not yet clear if Balraj is at all registered with Ola. The cab has been impounded.
When approached by a police team, Vikram said Balraj had been driving the Hyundai Accent cab (HR 55W 3346) for the past year.
In her complaint on Saturday, the Belgian woman said Balraj had asked her to sit on the front seat to give directions, saying his GPS device had stopped working. He then kissed her on the cheek and took her pictures.
Balraj was produced before a magistrate on Sunday and sent to 14-day judicial custody. Foreign minister Sushma Swaraj asked the LG for a report on the incident.
"Two teams, led by CR Park SHO Govind Chauhan and additional SHO Sanjeev Kumar, were formed to track down the driver," said Mandeep Singh Randhawa, DCP , south-east.The team approached Vikram at his house in Gurgaon and he took them to Balraj's home at an EWS colony near Sushant Lok.The cab was found there. A resident of Alwar, he stayed with his brother in Gurgaon.
Ola said it had permanently blacklisted the vehicle, the associated operator and driver. "We will share all required information with the authorities to help resolve this," said a spokesman.Police will approach Ola on Monday to find out if Balraj was registered with them.
The woman said in her statement that she had booked the cab to go to CR Park. After a while, she found the driver had veered off the route being shown on her mobile. The driver then told her that his GPS had stopped working and requested her to come to the front seat.
She said the driver stopped near Hauz Khas and pulled up the blinds. He offered to click her photographs on her mobile as a memory and deleted some of her last dialled numbers. He then took out his own mobile and clicked a few photos and offered to send it to her. When she objected, the driver promised to delete them. He then kissed her on the cheek. When she objected, he tried to explain that this was normal custom in India. A case has been registered against Balraj, police said.
