NHRC pulls up Delhi police over missing children

NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports on children missing from East Delhi and issued notice to Delhi Police Commissioner calling for a "factual report" on the matter within four weeks.
In all, 15 children including three from a single family were reported to have gone missing in recent times in the national capital, the NHRC said quoting media reports.
These children are reportedly from poor families and their parents are rickshaw pullers or daily wage earners who have reportedly been trying to trace their wards for months together but to no avail, it noted.
"This is a serious issue of violation of human rights of children," the Commission observed.
The NHRC discussed the matter yesterday and issued notice to the Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal calling for a factual report in this connection within four weeks from the date of the receipt of the notice.
The commission noted that of the total, six children reportedly went missing on a single day on February 10 while they were on their way to school - Sarvodaya Vidyalya, Vishwas Nagar in East Delhi.
These teenagers, aged between 14 and 17 years, were all residents of New Sanjay Amar Colony. Police registered two cases of kidnapping a day after they went missing.
