NDMC chairman Naresh Kumar announced that the council will dedicate this subway to artists for showcasing their work. “We will direct the department concerned to make arrangements for it,” he added.

As many as 42 contemporary artists and art students from across the country are participating in the exhibition to promote art and culture in open spaces. “The main objective for organising such an event is to bring out people from their mundane life,” Kumar said.

The exhibition will be open to the general public from July 30 to August 8 and from August 10 to 27 from 11am to 8pm. Artworks like waste-to-art project, paintings with different themes, photography and sculptures are featured there.

Curator Kishore Labar said that over 150 paintings and sculptures are on display. “We have engaged both senior artists and college students. It will be a good opportunity for the students to learn from the seniors. Also, many artists who cannot afford to display their artwork in a gallery are featured there. Organising such an event will serve a dual purpose — ensure that the subway is well-maintained and artist are given an opportunity to showcase their work,” he added.

Kapil Kapoor, a sculptor, has showcased a sculpture of a woman made of fibre describing her inner happiness. Another artist, Chiranjib, has a painting of a throne painted in zebra skin, which challenges the current system of society.
