NEW DELHI: A 27-year-old housewife, Kavita, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in New Sanjay Amar Colony near Anand Vihar on Wednesday. While her parents allege that she was murdered by her in-laws after she failed to conceive a child, Kavita's in-laws claim that she committed suicide as she was frustrated over her inability to conceive. The police have also detained the deceased's husband, 34-year-old Sanjay Kumar.
On Wednesday, Kavita's in-laws found her lying unconscious in her first-floor bedroom. They called up her parents in Kerawal Nagar in north east Delhi. When the latter reached Hegdewar hospital, they were told that Kavita had tried to commit suicide.
"However, initial medical reports suggested she died due to falling from a height and had injury marks on her neck. We have therefore detained the husband and will question him soon," said Ajay Choudhry, DCP (East). Sanjay is the owner of a cycle repairing shop and is the eldest among the five brothers. The couple had been married in February 2000.
According to Rampal, the father of the deceased, his daughter was murdered by her husband and in-laws so that Sanjay would be free to marry again and father a son. "My daughter was ill-treated because her in-laws felt she was infertile. However, they did not even think to take their own son to the doctor for a check-up," he said. He alleged that his daughter was strangled to death. "Later, they tried to show that she had fallen from the first-floor of the building. When their plan failed, they circulated the theory that she had hanged herself from the fan," said Rampal.
