NEW DELHI: In a span of just 14 hours, mobile snatchers ran amok in Mayur Vihar and its adjacent areas, striking within a 2km radius and targeting five people, two of whom were stabbed. Police said they are investigating the cases on priority and some of the suspects have been identified. FIRs have been registered in all five cases at Mayur Vihar police station.
On Sept 1, Ram Sewak Singh (52), a private firm employee, went to seek blessings at Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple in Mayur Vihar Phase I. Around 4pm, he was standing on the road and checking his phone when two youths on a red bike emerged from Chilla side. The pillion rider allegedly snatched Singh’s mobile and fled.
Another person in the vicinity was targeted the same night. At 9.46pm, Rahul, a 21-year-old youth, was returning home in an e-rickshaw and talking on his phone. Two young boys on a black scooty allegedly approached him and the pillion rider snatched Rahul’s phone.
Cops suspect common thread in snatching-stabbings
As the suspects attempted to escape, the victim chased them and managed to catch hold of the scooty, causing it to fall. However, one of the youths fled with his mobile while the other was caught by passersby and thrashed. He was later handed over to police.
In the third incident, Avninder Parihar, a lawyer visiting the city to attend a meeting, was staying at a hotel near Mayur Vihar district centre. After dinner, he was taking a stroll outside the hotel when a person wearing a black helmet appeared suddenly on a bike and snatched his phone.
The fourth incident took place around 12.10am on Sept 2. Pravesh Haad, a 28-year-old man, had stepped out of his house to buy food, when three men tried to snatch his mobile phone. When he resisted, one of them stabbed him from behind. As he fell, the suspects fled with his phone. The victim called up the police using his mother’s phone. He was later provided medical aid for his injury.
In the fifth incident that happened around 6.20am Sept 2, snatchers targeted a 24-yearold man, Vineet, who had just left home on his bike to go to the gym. He was barely a few metres from his house when three men on a bike approached him and tried to snatch his phone. They stabbed him in the thigh when he resisted and fled with his mobile handset. Hearing him scream, Vineet’s father ran to help his son and took him to a hospital for treatment.
Police suspect the involvement of the same set of persons in both the stabbings, which happened barely five hours apart.

'Suspect foul play': 15-year-old murders man at whose shop his mother was electrocuted in Delhi's Preet Vihar
A 15-year-old boy in east Delhi's Preet Vihar fatally attacked shopkeeper Kapil, believing he was responsible for his mother's electrocution two months prior. The incident took place near Vikas Marg, and police apprehended the boy within three hours after reviewing CCTV footage. An FIR has been lodged against the minor.
