IMD issues yellow alert for rain, thunderstorms in Delhi on Sunday and Monday
NEW DELHI: The city is likely to receive more spells of light showers from Sunday to Friday with gusty winds of over 50kmph, keeping daytime temperatures below normal and extreme heat at bay.
On Friday, the city saw clear skies, yet the temperatures were below normal as an impact of the rain and hailstorms on Thursday. At base station Safdarjung, the maximum temperature was 36.4 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal, against 39.9 degrees Celsius a day earlier. The minimum temperature was 22.8 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal.
According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature may spike slightly, but will fall again. It has also issued a yellow alert for rain and thunderstorms on Sunday and Monday. "The fall in maximum temperatures by two-three degrees during the next 24 hours, rise by about two degrees for subsequent 24 hours and fall by three-five degrees thereafter," stated IMD.
On Saturday, the maximum temperature is expected to be 38-40 degrees Celsius, before dropping again under the influence of another western disturbance. The daytime temperature on Sunday may be 36-38 degrees Celsius, and on Monday, 35-37 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, the city’s air quality improved within moderate levels. The air quality index, on a scale of 0 to 500, was 120 on Friday against 148 a day earlier. "The air quality is likely to be in the moderate category from May 2 to May 4. For the next six days, it is likely to be in the moderate to poor category,” stated the early warning system.
