MCD’s plan: Garbage won’t touch the ground
New Delhi: Garbage collected across Delhi may soon stop touching the ground. Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is planning to set up modern transfer stations in all 12 zones to ensure that waste is directly transferred into trucks and transported for processing.Under the proposed system, the waste will be directly loaded on to trucks and transported for processing.
Officials told TOI that the civic body is in consultation with Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for setting up these facilities."The initiative aims to reduce open dumping and improve hygiene by gradually replacing traditional dhalaos with closed and mechanised compacting systems. The system will help prevent garbage from spreading to surrounding areas and ensure that waste is moved for processing down the line," an official said.Meanwhile, to improve construction and demolition (C&D) waste management, MCD has geo-mapped around 111 primary collection sites on its website and the GSDL platform for public access. Another 48 sites have been identified across the 12 zones for development as new C&D waste collection points.Alongside improvements in waste management, MCD has also intensified road cleaning operations across the city. The civic body maintains a total road network of about 6,130 km of varying widths, where regular manual sweeping is carried out by nearly 57,000 sanitation workers. The garbage collected during sweeping is first deposited at local dumping points in different zones and later transported to the city's three landfill sites. The civic body has also undertaken planting drives to help mitigate air pollution. According to official data, MCD has planted 4.2 lakh plants between April 2025 and this Jan. This includes 1.2 lakh trees, 2.7 lakh shrubs and 22,289 bamboo plants, against a target of 7 lakh.Officials said the greening initiative is aimed at improving the city's air quality and strengthening urban green cover.
