NEW DELHI: Sharpening its attack on AAP over a video of jailed minister
Satyendar Jain getting a massage inside his Tihar cell, BJP on Tuesday demanded his immediate removal from the Delhi government’s council of ministers.
Alleging that the man giving the massage was an inmate lodged in the jail in a rape case of a minor, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia also demanded an apology from AAP convener and chief minister Arvind Kejriwal for defending Jain. AAP had claimed that Jain was receiving physiotherapy following a spinal injury and accused BJP of doing “cheap” politics on health issues by illegally leaking CCTV footage. Jain has been in judicial custody since May in an alleged money-laundering case.
Calling AAP “arajak aparadhi party“ (anarchist criminal party), Bhatia accused Jain of “circumventing the law”. He said, “Kejriwal should apologise to the entire nation and Jain should not retain the post of a Delhi minister for a minute,” Bhatia said. He added that Kejriwal should resign if “his shoulders are too weak” to carry the responsibility of dismissing Jain after this episode.
The BJP spokesperson said if Jain was facing a “genuine” medical issue, he should be given treatment as per the jail manual. “Surprisingly, the person giving a massage to Jain is jailed under the POCSO Act... How can a rape accused be giving massage to Jain?” Bhatia questioned. “Kejriwal’s silence shows he has nothing to say in defence of his minister. Keeping Jain in the cabinet despite such corruption charges proves that whatever crime the jailed minister has committed, Kejriwal is equally guilty of them,” he alleged.
In a letter to Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal, BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor urged her to demand a report from the jail administration on the allegations of Jain taking a massage from an inmate facing rape charges under the POCSO Act.
