NEW DELHI: Masked assailants struck in broad daylight on Thursday, shooting down two brothers both Coca-Cola dealers as they were supervising the loading of soft drink bottles at Kalyanpuri in east Delhi. The victims, Deepak (35) and Dheeraj Malhotra (29) were shot outside their DSIDC complex office around 3.35 pm. They were rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where Deepak was declared dead on arrival.
Dheeraj died a few hours later. The police have ruled out robbery as a motive for the crime. Two attackers, their faces covered with cloth, walked up to the brothers and shot them without uttering a word, an employee of the Malhotras told the police. Bhajia claimed to have chased the youths but said they scaled a wall and managed to get away. The attackers had come on a motorcycle, another eyewitness said.
While the bullet hit Deepak on the left side of the chest, Dheeraj was shot in the head. The police said that the bullets had been fired from a locally-made pistol. Another bullet apparently hit their Esteem car. "Their parents are in a state of shock and we have not been able to talk to them as yet. We hope they will be able to tell us if the victims were involved in any business rivalry," said a police officer. Madhup Tiwari, deputy commissioner of police (east), said, "The family members say they have not received any threat from anybody. It's too early to say what was the motive but what's certain is that there was no attempt to commit robbery,". The victims lived at Vasundhara in Ghaziabad.
