NEW DELHI: A 38-year-old man was attacked at least nine times with scissors allegedly by a 22-year-old who was asked to not smoke inside a barber shop in southwest Delhi's Kishangarh area on Monday, police said, the accused, who was inebriated at the time of the incident, has been arrested.

Abhay Kumar had gone for a haircut when he asked the accused, Mohit Mahlawat alias Manu, to drag on his cigarette outside as he was allergic to smoke. Mahlawat started arguing with Kumar and eventually started attacking him with scissors.

Kumar was admitted to the hospital and his condition was stated to be stable, police said.

A case of attempt to murder has been registered against Mahlawat who is the son of the barber's landlord.

Smoking there is a prohibited act. Not that one should have taken law in his hand (inebriated or not), but probably itw as due to aggressiveness of the smoker (and not inebriation) . In fact as per law, the barbar should have objected (politely of course), but he won't due to loss in business and allow illegal act to be done. Two illegalities resulted in third (severe one). BTW I am a smoker, almost chain, even in my age - and law abiding - (not very strictly of course if one reads every line), but never when even one person is in passive smoking line (including family members- I use the open roof as my smoking den, the large trees around the house, I hope filter the harmful even from neighbour's home). In fact that's why I avoid Indian Railways (except overnight) and manage the few hours inconvenience of flight. Shops? Out of syllabus.
