NEW DELHI: A 32-year-old man, Suraj Prakash, died in police custody on Monday after a confrontation between two parties in a road rage incident in northwest Delhi's Adarsh Nagar area, according to officials. The family members of the victim claim that his death resulted from a beating by the policemen.

The incident occurred when the police intervened in a road rage altercation around 2:30am near the Adarsh Nagar metro station on the road leading to Jahangirpuri.

As per a senior police officer, a patrol party, in response to the altercation, attempted to intervene and diffuse the fight. However, the two parties persisted in the conflict, compelling the staff to request an emergency response vehicle from the Adarsh Nagar Police Station.

Upon the arrival of the ERV at the scene, only three individuals, including Suraj Prakash, remained. They were transported to BJRM Hospital in Jahangirpuri around 4am for a medical examination, stated the officer.

Following the three individuals being brought to the police station for legal procedures, Suraj Prakash suddenly fell ill. He was promptly taken again to BJRM Hospital, where he was pronounced brought dead, according to the officer.

A brother of the Majlis Park resident informed reporters that Suraj Prakash had been killed by the police.

"My brother was killed by those policemen. He was passing the area when he saw two people fighting. When he tried to intervene in the matter, one of the policemen hit him with a stick and asked him to leave. My brother took out his mobile phone and started making a video of the scene. The policemen saw this and attacked him," the brother alleged.

He claimed that six to seven policemen were present at the scene, and all of them were intoxicated.

The police stated that a judicial inquiry into the matter is underway.
