NEW DELHI: Cafés, restaurants, malls and shops were decked up as people soaked in the spirit of romance on Valentine’s Day. Markets and malls recorded a higher footfall than usual on Tuesday after the subdued, pandemic-hit two years.
Most restaurants and cafes were flooded with men and women, young and old, who wanted to celebrate the day of love. Many others spent hours in the markets, enjoying the street foods, taking selfies, shopping and dining in restaurants which came up with special menus for the day.
Susan Saifuddin, a Canada resident, and her husband, Waheed, who works in New Delhi, spent quality time over tea. “We have been married for five months and we had a great time conversing for hours while having cake and tea. We will soon shift to Canada and we were happy to leave a good memory of Delhi behind,” said Susan.
Rashmi, who was walking hand in hand with her partner in Khan Market, said, “The weather has become pleasant. We did nothing special, just spent the day together.” Another couple, who wished not to be named, smiled, “It’s our first Valentine’s Day and we haven’t told many people about our relationship. We exchanged gifts and we will go for a romantic dinner at night.”
Shopkeeper Harsh at Khan Market said chocolates were high in demand. “In comparison with the past two years, we had good business this Valentine’s Day,” he said. Some shopkeepers claimed, however, that there were fewer customers than in the pre-pandemic day. Florist Lokesh said, “Though sales picked up this time, it was less than before Covid. We had expected sales to match pre-pandemic levels.”
Select Citywalk Mall in Saket had romantic decor and photo booths to make the day a memory of a lifetime. Yogeshwar Sharma, CEO & executive director of the mall, said, “Love cannot have a definite meaning and we are proud to have launched the digital campaign called #WhatisLove.”
