NEW DELHI: It was a sight that not many residents of Lawrence Road were prepared to see after being woken up by a crashing noise in the dead of the night. They rushed out and found a fully-loaded truck lying on top of four cars belonging to residents of block A-1. A Hyundai Accent, two Santro cars and an Indica were disfigured beyond recognition.
The truck's driver and helper had a miraculous escape though.
According to the Keshavpuram police, the truck (DL-1GB 6302) was carrying wheat for the Food Corporation of India from Najafgarh area. The driver was probably sleepy and he lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a sharp turn. The truck crashed into an iron railing, overturned, and landed on four cars parked at block A-1 around 2.30 am on Friday.
Interestingly, the driver and helper escaped unhurt. "The two managed to escape even before the residents could arrive at the spot. However, we have traced the truck's owner. The vehicle belongs to a local transport company near Keshavpuram. The owner has given us information about the driver and we will arrest him soon," said a police officer. The truck has been impouned and a case of rash and negligent driving lodged.
"In all probability, the driver dozed off. So, he lost control over the vehicle near a Mother Diary booth. The truck hit through a railing, overturned, and ultimately landed on the cars," said a senior officer.
The cars have been disfigured beyond recognition. As Mayank Arora, a resident who sent the photographs of the accident to TOI, said: "The Indica suffered maximum damage only its wheels were visible. While the backside of one of the Santro cars has been totally damaged, the other car's left with just its engine. The Hyundai escaped with some bruises."
Anup Sagar, another resident, said he was woken up by a crashing noise. "I peered out of the window and saw the truck lying on top of four cars near house number 129. It was a shocking sight. It's miraculous that no one was injured in the incident," he said.
