LG reviews work to rejuvenate Yamuna

NEW DELHI: One out of the three major drains polluting Najafgarh Jheel has been trapped, lieutenant governor Vinai Kumar Saxena said on Saturday.
According to a statement from the LG office, Saxena led a team of officials from both Delhi and Haryana who reviewed the efforts to rejuvenate the Yamuna on Saturday. He also set deadlines for several works being carried out to achieve the rejuvenation of the lake and Najafgarh Drain.
"During the visit to Najafgarh Jheel, it was found that much work has been done and some were in progress as far as the polluting drains are concerned.Out of the three drains, L1, L2 and L3, which were polluting the lake from towards Gurgaon, the L1 drain has been trapped," stated the LG's office.
In Najafgarh Drain, which accounts for about 70% pollution in the Yamuna, 40% of the mostly untreated discharge comes from L1, L2 and L3 drains flowing out of Gurgaon in Haryana. Industrial effluents from different areas in Haryana are also directed towards Najafgarh Drain.
Saxena appreciated the cleaning of hyacinths from the Sahibi river with the help of push motor boats and instructed officers to clear the sludge by dredging, if required.
