DU student claims torture at Adarsh Nagar police station

NEW DELHI: A 29-year-old Delhi University student was allegedly

tortured

inside Adarsh Nagar police station by a group of cops, including the SHO. An FIR was registered after preliminary probe indicated that the victim was beaten up.


The incident reportedly occurred on the night of August 25. The victim, a final-year

law student

, said that he received a phone call from an unknown number around midnight. “My nephew was on the line saying he had been taken into

police custody

. He asked me to come to the police station. When I reached there, I was told that the number from which the call was made belonged to a

policeman

,” the complainant said.

In his complaint, the victim said that after some time his nephew came out chained with two other men, accompanied by five policemen. When he questioned the policemen about the crime committed by his nephew, they allegedly started abusing him. The argument then allegedly turned violent and, according to the complainant, he was slapped by the cops.

“I was taken into a room on the second floor of the police station. The policemen forced me to take off my clothes and started hitting me with a pipe. They then tried to insert the pipe inside me,” the victim alleged, adding that he was then taken to another room along with the three apprehended youths.

The victim further alleged that the SHO thrashed them with shoes and threatened to book them under false cases.

DCP (northwest) Vijayanta Arya said that a case was registered under sections of IPC and SC/ST Act on Sunday based on the complaint of the student. The investigation will be done by an ACP-rank officer of the district investigation unit.

Police have claimed that the complainant’s nephew was taken into custody in an extortion case and was being questioned about it. The complainant, however, claimed that he and his nephew were at the police station during the period which the policemen claimed that he had indulged in extortion. To prove his case, the victim has written to senior officers to get access to footage of CCTV cameras at the police station.

The investigating team is quizzing witnesses who were present at the police station when the alleged incident took place. Action will be taken according to the findings of the probe, said a senior officer.
