Khadi push in city schools, govt unveils scheme for 16k artisans
New Delhi: Delhi govt is working on a plan to promote khadi products in schools across the city to familiarise students with the fabric's cultural, economic and environmental significance. The initiative aligns with the Centre's focus on strengthening the khadi sector and encouraging the use of indigenous products. An official said the govt had approved the proposal to promote khadi in schools but would not set up khadi outlets on campuses. Instead, it will prepare a detailed action plan to increase awareness and boost sales among youngsters.
Under the proposal, schools may host exhibitions, awareness sessions and workshops on the history of khadi, its role in the freedom movement and its relevance in sustainable fashion. Students will be introduced to khadi as an eco-friendly, hand-spun and handwoven fabric that supports rural livelihoods. The govt has also announced the Delhi Khadi Kaushal Vikas Yojana, aimed at benefiting more than 16,000 artisans. Industries minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the scheme combines skill development, financial support, tool kits and digital market access through an e-catalogue to help artisans become self-reliant entrepreneurs. "The scheme will bring dignity, sustainable income and long-term economic security to more than 16,000 families in Delhi," he said.Delhi Khadi and Village Industries Board (DKVIB) managing director K Mahesh said the scheme will be implemented in 2025–26 and 2026–27 and will provide structured skill training to residents who have lived in the city for at least 5 years."The programme will cover multiple trades, including Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), merchandiser, documentation executive, IT help desk attendant, self-employed tailor, pattern master and fashion clothing production. These courses are designed to enhance employability and promote self-employment within the Khadi and Village Industries sector," Mahesh said.Beneficiaries will receive structured training along with a daily stipend of Rs 400. Food will be provided during training sessions and participants will receive free tool kits to support self-employment.A key feature of the scheme is an e-catalogue platform that will offer trained artisans digital visibility and market access. DKVIB will implement the scheme to ensure transparency, effective execution and measurable outcomes.
