The English Department of Janki Devi Memorial College (JDMC) in collaboration with a publishing house organised a poetry festival titled In Verse recently. Celebrated as well as new poets, including students across colleges of Delhi University, read from their works. The festival also invited faculty of Janki Devi Memorial College to read out their poems. This forum provided an exclusive opportunity for upcoming poets. It was a very insightful and emotional outpouring in verse by both established as well as budding poets on a variety of issues ranging from coping with loss, the pandemic, the true meaning of freedom, mythological men and women, empowerment of women and many more relevant topics. "In the times that we live where each of us has a tale of struggle, of pain, of loss, poetry serves to channel our feelings into beautiful words that create empathy. Poetry, especially that born of sorrow, is cathartic. Young people like our students find a creative outlet for things that torment them and many write powerfully on issues like war and empowerment. Poetry creates communities of artistic and empathetic people. Students need more than the curriculum or even counseling to help them negotiate the travails of living in an unpredictable world. Poetry is the perfect forum," said Swati Pal, principal, JDMC.
