NEW DELHI: The dengue outbreak at AIIMS has come as no surprise to students, researchers and doctors who reside in cramped quarters with uncleaned coolers located near a drain and where passages between hostels pass by toilets which make an ideal breeding ground for the aedes mosquito. The death of a student and continuing inflow of in-house dengue cases has thrown the AIIMS community into deep gloom.
A Times City team, which visited the residential quarters, found hostel numbers 3, 4 and 5 in a particularly insanitary condition.
Right behind hostel number 3, is a "dengue" drain, which hostel residents describe as the "root of all problems". This was where the first dengue case was reported about 15 days ago. Said Dr Ashwani Gupta: "We have complained about this drain several times, but nothing happened. Earlier, there used to be slums near that drain, which were removed but there is so much vegetation now. This is the place where maximum breeding happens but no one bothers at all."The other prominent breeding grounds for mosquitoes are desert coolers used by hostel inmates. Students claim that no measures are taken to clean these coolers or put chemicals to check breeding. "I live on the second floor of the hostel and since the cooler is fitted outside the window, I cannot clean it. Authorities just don't bother. MCD officials are checking coolers door-to-door in the city, but authorities here completely ignore this," said a fifth year student.Problem areas include toilets and the canteen. This has created considerable resentment amongst residents. Said a student: "No one bothers about all these places. Even though this is a medical institute, no special care is taken."Grieving over his friend, Kamla Raj Kiran's sudden death, a student who did not want to be named, angrily points out that all that the authorities have done so far to fight the disease outbreak is to put up posters on campus.Another safe haven for the dengue mosquito includes an area where construction work of the upcoming dental college is being carried out. Labourers here have put up a makeshift arrangement which has come up around a lot of scrap and vegetation here.
