NEW DELHI: R Madhavan Pillai, a veteran of the Indian National Army (INA), marked his 100th birthday by paying tribute at the National War Memorial in Delhi on Thursday. He urged the youth to follow Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s principles of unity, faith, and sacrifice.
"The youth need to work hard for the country. Netaji taught us about unity, faith, and sacrifice, and they must follow these," said Pillai.
As one of the last surviving INA veterans, Pillai played a key role as a recruiting officer and fundraiser, mobilizing support in 32 locations across Burma, including Yangon and Mayongone.
His dedication to the freedom struggle led to an eight-month imprisonment in Rangoon jail in 1945.
In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded a silver medal in 2021 on Netaji’s 125th birth anniversary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also felicitated him at the Parakram Diwas celebrations at the Red Fort on January 23, 2024.
Even at 99, Pillai remains active in preserving the legacy of Netaji and the INA.
