NEW DELHI: Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani was on Monday heckled at a seminar in north Delhi by ABVP supporters who were outraged at his presence in the capital.
Geelani was attending a seminar organized by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies.
Witnesses said that when Geelani arrived at the venue in the Civil Lines area, protestors from ABVP, DUDU and Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena surrounded him and began raising slogans asking him to leave the venue amidst chants of Vande Matram.

However, intervention by police saved Geelani as they escorted him inside the venue. DCP (north) I B Rani, said, “The situation was under control and no unwanted persons were allowed to enter the venue. We stopped them on time. No case has been registered as we have not received any complaint yet.”
Condemning the attack, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah said it will not make the Kashmir issue disappear.
Reacting to the incident, he said, “These BSKS & ABVP goons are bloody idiots. Anyone can assault an old man. As if attacking Syed Ali Shah Geelani will make the Kashmir issue disappear,” he tweeted. ABVP state secretary Rohit Chahal said his outfit will continue objecting to the presence of Geelani at any seminar in the capital.
