NEW DELHI: Worrying about grades, pressure of whether one would be able to make it to the college of choice or not, answering pointed queries from relatives life is not easy if one's just passed Class XII exams. And instead of getting help, hours of frantic calling on helpline numbers can can only add to one's frustration. With few helpline numbers and added constraints of only fixed times and days to call, most of these numbers are hardly a solace.
Being result time, most helplines were perpetually busy and experts pointed out that more helplines numbers were required."The Class XII result is too premature a criteria to proclaim a winner or loser in life and surely not reason enough to end life, a fact few students and even fewer parents and teachers understand. There is more to life than Board results," said Aruna Broota, a counsellor. Many counsellors also feel that it is the casual attitude of schools which have "counsellors only in name" that leads to such incidents year after year.Said Dr Sanjay Chugh, a psychiatrist: "Most Delhi schools have counsellors who are not even trained properly and exist because it is a compulsion according to the ruling... ...Most of them act as substitute teachers. If there is effective counselling, there is no reason for a student to commit suicide. Counselling has to be year long."Said Dr Samir Parekh, another psychiatrist: "Several students do not do well but not all go and commit suicide. There is a need to identify the vulnerable ones and be more attentive towards them. Change in the education system and attitude of the teachers and parents is also the need of the hour."
