'He had vowed to quit biking'
NEW DELHI: On Saturday night, during a long telephone conversation with his friend Saurabh Sharma, Amit Chopra had promised to quit biking.
A common friend had recently suffered an accident and Saurabh had been persuading Amit to leave his dangerous hobby for good.
Relieved by the promise, the two friends then made plans for a shopping trip on Sunday morning.

A trip that was never destined to happen.
On Sunday morning instead, Saurabh got a call - Amit had died in a bike accident on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway early on Sunday morning. He had kept his promise - partially. He had not taken his own bike but was riding pillion on the bike of his friend Sanjiv Raj. Both died in the accident.
Describing Amit as a ‘‘regular, fun-loving 23-year-old’’ helping his father out in their luggage business, Saurabh, while speaking to Times City on Sunday evening was a devastated man.
‘‘I have known him for seven years. He was always passionate about bikes but it was just a few months back that he got into this biking club. They would go for races and he used to boast that he would at times touch 230 km an hour - something all of us were very scared about since a friend had recently had a nasty accident. We kept trying to dissuade him from it and he kept saying he would, eventually. It was for the first time last night that he actually said that he would give up his dangerous passion from Sunday. He never got the time," said Saurabh.
His middle class family based in Lakshmi Nagar had always been tacitly encouraging about the passion though. As a family member put it: ‘‘It was not as if he was drinking, smoking or partying. He was fond of bikes - he had a jazzy one himself - and nobody found anything wrong with it or tried to stop him. Who would have imagined something like this would happen?’’
