HC designates 70 lawyers as senior advocates
NEW DELHI: After a gap of nearly three-and-a-half years, Delhi high court on Friday designated 70 lawyers as senior advocates. The senior designation was conferred after a permanent committee, comprising Chief Justice Manmohan, the next two seniormost judges, Vibhu Bakhru and Yashwant Varma, additional solicitor general Chetan Sharma and senior advocates Sudhir Nandrajog and Mohit Mathur, evaluated the candidates.
Over 300 lawyers had applied for the coveted senior tag, which is granted by Supreme Court and high courts as a recognition of a lawyer’s ability, court craft and legal knowledge. The prized designation, which allows lawyers to increase their legal fees handsomely, was conferred on the 70 lawyers after weeks of interviews by the panel, finally culminating in a full court meeting that saw a free and frank analysis of each of the candidates shortlisted by the committee.
Those designated as senior advocates include Delhi govt’s standing counsel Santosh Tripathi and central govt's standing counsel Anil Soni and Anuraag Ahluwalia. Some of the other advocates designated as senior were Gautam Narayan, Rajdipa Behura, Madhav Khurana, Jeevesh Nagrath, Abhijat, Sumeet Pushkarna, Sonu Bhatnagar, Sai Deepak J and Arundhati Katju.
According to sources, a few lawyers’ applications have been deferred for now. It was in March 2021 that the high court last undertook such an exercise, when it gave the senior gown to 55 lawyers. In March, it formed a permanent committee for the purpose of evaluating the candidacy of advocates seeking to be designated as senior under the High Court of Delhi Designation of Senior Advocate Rules, 2018.
The high court also did away with the earlier requirement of a name being considered only if proposed by three senior advocates, which had attracted a lot of criticism.
