Hailstorms, thundershowers in Delhi; fights, trains delayed

NEW DELHI: Strong showers lashed the capital in the early hours of Tuesday as traffic snarls were witnessed in several locations, while some flights were also delayed due to the adverse weather conditions. Isolated locations in Delhi also witnessed hailstorm with more rain likely to occur later in the day, IMD officials said on Tuesday.


According to Times Now, around 15 Delhi-bound trains were delayed due to the bad weather.


While a spell of light rain was recorded on Monday, Delhi recorded spell of light-to-moderate rain in the early hours of Tuesday before receiving another spell in the morning.



The regional Met department says Delhi’s Safdarjung observatory, taken as the base for Delhi’s weather, has received 14.8mm of rain till 8.30am.







The IMD had forecast an intense wet spell over northern India for January 21 and 22 with heavy rain and heavy snowfall likely to occur. For Delhi, the IMD had forecast heavy rain at isolated places, accompanied with hailstorms.


Officials at the IGI airport said the weather did not disrupt operations and flights were functioning smoothly. The Airlines, however, took to Twitter to inform passengers to arrive at the airport in advance, owing to traffic snarls. “#TravelUpdate Due to rain, there is traffic congestion enroute to Delhi airport road. Customers are advised to allow more time for their journey to the airport.” tweeted Vistara.



The Met has forecast a drop in both maximum and minimum temperature by 2-3 degrees in the next few days, with a chance of light rain likely to occur on Wednesday as well.



Delhi had recorded the warmest January day in 12 years on Sunday when it recorded a maximum of 28.7 degrees Celsius.
