NEW DELHI: The first day of the monsoon session of
Delhi assembly
had a rocky start and had to be adjourned twice in a matter of one hour. Aam
Aadmi Party
and BJP MLAs sparred over what to discuss.
While BJP asked for an adjournment over the death of three sanitation workers in Lajpat Nagar on Sunday, AAP wanted to discuss the Chandigarh stalking case.
After the proceedings began on Tuesday, the Speaker started reading out the business listed for the day, including a discussion on the “safety and security of women and vulnerable section of society in Delhi in the light of harassment of Varnika Kundu in centrally policed Chandigarh”, allegedly by the son of Haryana BJP president.
Opposition
MLAs Vijender Gupta, Jagdish Pradhan and Manjinder Singh Sirsa demanding a discussion on the death of three sewer workers. They were followed by AAP MLAs, all of whom came wearing badges in support of Kundu. In the ensuing din that followed, the House was adjourned for 15 minutes.
However, even when the House reconvened at 2.25pm, AAP MLAs continued to sloganeering. Following this, the House was adjourned for the second time around 3pm, to reconvene half an hour later. When the session reconvened, members failed to come to a consensus. This time, the Speaker had the three members marshalled out.
