NEW DELHI: Those commuting by bus in central Delhi will not have get off far from their destination as buses will not be diverted on way-off routes due to the ongoing Republic Day parade rehearsals.
On Tuesday, buses were allowed till the last point possible during the parade rehearsals. It had been originally decided that buses would be either diverted or stopped as Mansingh Road, Janpath, Rafi Marg and Vijay Chowk were to remain closed for traffic from 9am to 12 noon during parade rehearsal.
On Tuesday, buses were allowed to ply until the point near the parade road while private cars were diverted from Subramaniam Bharti road towards Pandara Road and also diverted at Motilal Nehru Place, said traffic cops.
This same plan will be put in place for the next two days of parade rehearsal, on Friday and Saturday, said traffic cops.
Joint commissioner of police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg said, "We have noticed that private cars usually cause congestion. Diversion of buses is not required unless they pass through Rajpath. There was significantly lesser congestion on Maulana Azad Road and C-Hexagon was closed for minimum time. The plan worked well and so we will follow the same system for the next two days of practice. Now, bus commuters will not have to walk long stretches."
Armoured cars that usually move at the same speed while moving past the saluting base were asked to move at a normal speed while passing C-Hexagon. On Tuesday they would move together to reduce the stoppage time for traffic in C-Hexagon.
