NEW DELHI: A 21-year-old student in east Delhi was allegedly robbed at knife-point after three men barged into her house on Tuesday. With the arrest of one person, police have recovered most of the stolen jewellery.
The incident was reported around 12.30pm from the Shakarpur School Block area. The victim, Priyanka Sidhu, was alone at her house when the incident took place, said DCP (east) Ajay Kumar.
While Priyanka’s father, Prem Singh Sidhu, was at his office in Gurgaon, her mother Vinita and brother were out of town. “Three men came to Priyanka’s first-floor house with a wedding card. A tenant, identified as Shakuntala, was on the ground floor at that time," said a senior police officer.
After gaining entry, the three accused held Priyanka hostage and looted a golden chain, jewellery and cash from the locker. Just then, Shakuntala came to her house to ask for water. Finding no response, Shakuntala tried calling on Priyanka’s cellphone. By this time, Priyanka managed to run out of the house and begged Shakuntala for help. Hearing Shakuntala’s hue and cry, other neighbours also rushed to help. The accused panicked and fled the spot. Later, some locals and the patrolling cops, ASI Zafruddin and constable Anil, nabbed one of the accused, Shailendra, in a nearby park. The cops are questioning him to reach to his two associates.
Locals have blamed police for poor patrolling in the area. “We have no security and repeated requests have fallen on deaf ears," said a local resident. The police, however, said that it was due to their efforts that one of the accused was nabbed and booty recovered.
