Gautam Gambhir on Monday announced that he will be holding cricket tournaments every year in
east Delhi for cricket enthusiasts from 10 assembly constituencies under the East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency. Gambhir said many boys from very poor family backgrounds got the opportunity to play cricket at world-class facilities during East Delhi Premier League cricket tournament which concluded on Monday.
"This tournament was designed in furtherance of PM Narendra Modi’s call to organize sporting events to encourage youngsters and inculcate sporting spirit amongst the public.
It gave opportunities to the poor sections of our society to showcase their talent and get recognition. Among the players who were selected and took part in the tournament, some sell tea, distribute newspapers, deliver milk and work as security guards to support their families,” Gambhir stated.
Prizes worth over Rs 60 lakh were distributed after the conclusion of the tournament. The winning team got Rs 30 lakh and runner up Rs 20 lakh. The man of the series was awarded a brand new car while best batsmen and bowler received Rs 1 lakh each.
The grand final of the tournament was held amidst fanfare in the Yamuna Sports Complex. Delhi BJP general secretary organisation Siddharthan, MP Hans Raj Hans, Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta and DDCA president Rohan Jaitley and others attended the occasion as guests of honour.
"I thank everyone for supporting my vision of having an international level tournament in my constituency at the newly redeveloped Yamuna Sports Complex. This tournament showcased the new facilities and infrastructure like state-of-the-art cricket ground, international level floodlights, modern dressing rooms, fully equipped spectator stands and much more," Gambhir stated.
