NEW DELHI: From

causes

that spoke about the need to have conversation about the refugee crisis in the world, to alleviating

stigmas

associated with Type 1

Diabetes

, the ‘

Great Delhi Run

’, which witnessed an 11% increase in registration this year, saw many coming out to talk about their causes and reaching out to the people.

With plastic being the theme of the season, Maahir Tanwar, a Class IX student from Adarsh Public School, came dressed as Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be a part of the ‘Great Delhi Run’. Accompanied by his schoolmates, a few dressed as

plastic bags

, Tanwar called for an end to the sage of plastics. “Every year we come out with new themes. And since PM Modi has called for an end to single-use plastic, we decided to make sure that we voice our concerns and make people aware,” Tanwar said.

Raising the issue of refugee crisis, Indian members of Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) came out in large numbers to make people aware about the trials and tribulations of refugees. With the theme of ‘walk in their shoes’, the 41 participants from MSF wore T-shirts with the message — ‘While for some running is a passion, for refugees, it is a matter of life and death.’

30 members of DIYA (Diabetes India Youth in Action), a non-profit trust, co-founded by a team of people living with type 1 Diabetes in India, took part in the ‘Great Delhi Run’. Harsh Kohli, a member of the organisation, said they are working “to alleviate stigmas associated with diabetes, providing lifestyle education for people, especially kids living with diabetes, advocating for better healthcare facilities, conducting events/workshops to provide social inclusiveness and to sensitise the community to ensure better healthcare for all.”

National Skill Development Corporation, meanwhile, partnered with Sarthak Educational Trust to enable participation of 40 people with disability in the fun run on Sunday. The participants were accompanied by 30 buddies and took part under the ‘Champions with Disabilities’ category.
