NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Wednesday claimed to have busted a racket allegedly involved in the smuggling of skins of Bengal tigers with the arrest of five people. The gang was active in Delhi and other NCR areas, and was illegally earning Rs 20 lakh for each skin.
According to the police, the accused have been identified as Amir Khan and Rahul Rawat, residents of Vasant Kunj, Deepak Kumar, a resident of Gurgaon, Mohit and Shivam Sisodiya, residents of Mahipalpur. Two tiger skins have been recovered from their possession.
Earlier, police received an input that the members of the racket would come to the Chhatarpur metro station to strike a deal with some prospective buyers of tiger skins. A team of cops laid a trap and Amir Khan was nabbed. From Khan’s possession, a skin was recovered, which was later confirmed to be that of a Bengal tiger.
Ravindra Yadav, Special Commissioner of Police (Crime), said, “During interrogation, it came to fore that Sisodiya was the main supplier. He had four tiger skins. When the police team laid the trap, Khan, Rahul and Mohit came there with a skin and were waiting for Deepak who was scheduled to come with the prospective buyers.”
Deepak was arrested later from Kullu in Himachal Pradesh.
