New Delhi: The Delhi government on Wednesday launched Wi-Fi service on DTC buses on a pilot basis. Transport minister Gopal Rai flagged off six such buses from Delhi Secretariat, which, apart from Wi-Fi, are also equipped with CCTV cameras and GPS. The trial run will be until January 15.
The service has been named Aam Aadmi Wi-Fi and will be free for the passengers.
Users will have to register with the network by typing their name, email address and cellphone number, following which they will receive a password on SMS. Stickers on the seats will guide the user. As of now, only 30 MB of data is available at broadband speed and access will be limited to just 10 minutes. Buses on ISBT airport service, Mudrika, outer Mudrika and route numbers 120, 764 and 781 have been equipped with the facility as of now.
Rai said each bus will have three cameras and another near the driver’s seat to capture activities outside the bus. DTC will audit the footage, he added.
By downloading an app, passengers could track the exact location of the bus through GPS. “This is the first step towards fulfilling the promise Delhi government had made about women’s safety and free Wi-Fi. The report of this trial run will come to us by January 15, following which we will open tenders till February 15 and install Wi-Fi on other buses,” Rai said.
