Farmers protest live updates: Security tightened at Jantar Mantar

Delhi Police on Friday morning tightened security at Jantar Mantar ahead of farmers' march from the Singhu border. Delhi Police personnel stuck like magnets to the farmers at Jantar Mantar to prevent any law and order situation and the day passed off peacefully. The cops escorted the protesters from Singhu to Jantar Mantar and back to Singhu on Thursday, the first day of the farmers’ Kisan Sansad. Around 30,000 police and paramilitary personnel were deployed across the city, with around 6,000 at Jantar Mantar. Traffic in the city was affected after farmers moved from Singhu border to Jantar Mantar to hold a demonstration against the agri laws at a time when the monsoon session is on in Parliament. ‘Kisan sansad' near Parliament enters 2nd day
The ‘Kisan sansad', being held at Jantar Mantar near Parliament where the Monsoon Session is underway, entered its second day on Friday. Paramilitary forces and police personnel have been deployed at the site with heavy barricading at the entrance to avoid any kind of untoward incident. The protest by the farmers was peaceful. (PTI)

AAP slams Centre, says it must talk with farmers
Aam Aadmi Party Punjab unit chief Bhagwant Mann and Punjab unit in-charge Jarnail Singh on Thursday slammed the central government over farmers’ issues. They claimed that “the Narendra Modi government, which is already suppressing the farmers with three new black farm laws, is now adding to that injury by introducing the Electricity Amendment Bill, 2021 that will eventually take away the rights of the state.”

Jam session: Movement of farmers causes traffic snarls
Traffic in the city was affected after farmers moved from Singhu border to Jantar Mantar to hold a demonstration against the agri laws at a time when the monsoon session is on in Parliament. The snarls were a result of excessive barricading done by police as a preventive measure to avoid a repeat of what occurred in parts of the city and in front of Red Fort on January 26 during the farmers’ tractor rally. A group of 200 farmers travelled to Jantar Mantar from Singhu border in buses with a police escort. The entire stretch they travelled on was manned by traffic and local cops.

The Kisan Sansad, the protesting farmers’ sit-in at Jantar Mantar, began on Thursday with a two-minute silence in memory of those who lost their lives during the eight-month-long agitation. Six leaders were nominated the ‘speaker’ and ‘deputy speakers’ of the session, while others sat as members of the farmers’ parliament to discuss the three farm laws they are campaigning to have repealed, among them the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) Bypass Act, 2020.

After eight months of harsh winters, unforgiving heat, and rains, farmers protesting against the three contentious agri laws on Thursday reached Jantar Mantar, a few metres away from Parliament where the Monsoon Session is underway, unrelenting in their demand that the legislations be scrapped. “We have come this far after losing many of our own. We are ready for a long haul. We have come prepared,” said Harpal Singh from Bharatiya Kisan Union (Chaduni), as he wrapped his saffron safa around his head.

With a group of farmers reaching Jantar Mantar here to protest against the three new farm laws, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Thursday urged them to leave the path of agitation and come for talks. Tomar said farmers across the country have favoured the three farm laws. After getting special permission from Delhi Lt Governor Anil Baijal, a group of 200 farmers reached Jantar Mantar -- adjacent to the Parliament Complex -- in central Delhi to protest against the Centre's three contentious farm laws amid the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament.
