NEW DELHI: A startling case of forgery has come to light with the CBI filing an FIR against some "unknown persons" who had allegedly tried to dupe the prime minister's Office, by producing a fake PMO letterhead at AIIMS and sought Rs 30,000 from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund towards the treatment of a patient. According to the CBI, the FIR filed in a Patiala House court here, recently by the CBI was the outcome of a letter received by the probe agency from Davinder P S Sandhu, director of PM's office last year.
In the letter by Sandhu, it has been mentioned: "A letter was received in prime minister's office from AIIMS, New Delhi, regarding grant from PM's National Relief Fund to Shri Omjee for medical treatment... A copy of PMO letter of sanction is attached... which is prima-facie fake since no letter had been issued by this office (PMO)." The CBI in the FIR has then mentioned that during the verification, it was found that on the "strength of the said fake letter of PMO, the prospective date of admission of the patient from the concerned doctor was taken and the letter was submitted in the junior account officer, AIIMS."
According to the FIR, the accounts officer then, forwarded the same to the secretary PMO requesting for issuance of a demand draft of Rs 30,000 in favour of AIIMS. According to CBI, further verification revealed that no such letter was ever issued from the PMO as such, by issuing a fake letter in the name of Sandhu, some unknown persons had cheated the patient Omjee, a resident of Bihar and also made an attempt to cheat the AIIMS by preparing a letter with a fake PMO leatterhead for sanction of financial aid of Rs 30,000 from the prime minister's relief fund for his treatment. The CBI after the verification has registered a case under offences of cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy against the unknown persons. sriharsha.k@timesgroup.com
