Deputy Commissioner of police (special cell) Ashok Chand said they learnt of this fake drugs racket during the recovery of a consignment of 20 kilograms of spurious drugs. ‘‘A raid was conducted at a medical agency in Kamla Market. On investigation, we learnt that the drugs had been sent by Akashdeep Goods Transport Company,’’ Chand said.
Police investigations under assistant commissioner of police P S Khushwah led them to Aligarh. But before the team could conduct a raid, the accused reportedly fled the area. On Friday, the police arrested the three accused in Delhi. ‘‘We had information about their meeting with one of the contacts here,’’ Chand said. During their questioning, the Varshney brothers reportedly told the police that they began their business with a chemist shop in Fafala Market.
Subsequently, they expanded their business and started trading in liquor. The brothers also opened finance companies which reportedly ran into losses. One of the brothers, Harsh, is allegedly a gambler and had accrued debt on himself.
To recover the losses, the brothers allegedly started dealing in spurious drugs. ‘‘They have been selling spurious drugs since last six years,’’ Chand said. The police are yet to ascertain the manufacturer of these drugs.
