NEW DELHI: Enforcement Directorate (ED) has apprehended three individuals from Kolkata - two Bangladeshi citizens, Rony Mondal and Sameer Chowdhary, along with an Indian national, Pintu Haldar, in relation to illegal infiltration and human trafficking activities in India.

This action follows the agency's searches at 17 locations across Jharkhand and West Bengal, investigating money laundering connected to Bangladeshi infiltration. The investigation stems from a First Information Report (FIR) registered on June 4 this year.

The authorities filed the case at Bariyatu Police Station in Ranchi, Jharkhand, invoking various sections of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, Passports Act 1967, and Foreigners Act, 1946.

According to the FIR, a 21-year-old Bangladeshi national, Nipah Akhtar Khushi, was transported to Kolkata by Manisha Ra with assistance from Jhuma on May 31, 2024. They crossed the Bangladesh border illegally through jungle areas with support from private agents.

The investigation centres on the unlawful entry of Bangladeshi nationals into India, facilitated by agents who provide counterfeit documents to establish Indian citizenship.

"Several persons are involved ni iliegal activities relating to illegal infiltration, making fake Identity proofs which are criminal activities linked to proceeds of crime as per the definition provided under section 2 (1)(u) of the PMLA, 2002.

It is thus, necessary to cause investigation relating to illegal infiltration of such persons from Bangladesh into India and the agents who are facilitating such activities which are aimed to acquire "Proceeds of Crime" and commit other criminal activities and hence, it is necessary to conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002," said the ED.
